The Faculty of the Department of Medical Microbiology
and Immunology participate in the training of students
for the PhD and MS degrees in the fields of Infection,
Immunity and Transplantation (IIT). The IIT track is
an area of concentration within the Biomedical Sciences
Graduate Program.
Faculty research interests include Gene Regulation,
Biology and Pathogenesis of Microbes, Viral Evolution,
Bioinformatics, Host Response to Infection, Innate
and Adaptive Immunity, Langerhan and Dendritic Cell
Biology, and Vaccine Development. These efforts focus
on autoimmune & allergic diseases, transplant rejection,
infectious diseases, and persistent bacterial and viral
infections, some of which are select agents and significant
human and animal pathogens.
Financial Aid
All students accepted unconditionally into the Biomedical
Sciences Ph.D. program will receive a full tuition
scholarship and a research stipend. The research stipend
is pegged to the National Institutes of Health, National
Research Service Award.
Admission
Admission requirements for the Biomedical Sciences
graduate program (the parent program that includes
the IIT Track), are:
*AN EARNED DEGREE: Baccalaureate or professional
doctoral degree granted by an accredited college or
university.
*GPA: A 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) from the institution
granting the baccalaureate. For an applicant to be
considered for "Regular" admission, they
must submit official transcripts confirming their degree
with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. An applicant
whose GPA is below 3.0 may be considered for "Conditional" admission.
Other criteria affecting status of admission (i.e.
Regular; Conditional), are program-specific.
*GRE/MCAT: The Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
is required for all applicants to the Biomedical Sciences
program and its four tracks. For MD/PhD and MD/MS dual
degree applicants, GRE scores are strongly recommended,
but MCAT scores may be accepted in lieu of GRE scores.
For the general GRE examination, applicants should
have a combined score of 1100 for the verbal and quantitative
parts and a score of 4 or higher in the analytical/writing
part.
*LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Three or more Letters
of Recommendation are required addressed to the College
of Graduate Studies Health Science Campus Admissions
office.
Application
Students interested in Immunity, Infection and Transplantation
should apply online (http://hsc.utoledo.edu/grad/application.html).
Students will enter the Ph.D. or Master program undeclared
with respect to the four Biomedical Sciences tracks,
then will identify a major advisor and align with the
Infection, Immunity and Transplantation track within
their first year of study.
